A recent Reddit post revealed that U.S. crypto exchange giant Coinbase may have to remove its “DApp browser functionality” of its crypto wallet app from the Apple (NasdaqGS:AAPL) mobile app store. The CEO of Coinbase, Brian Armstrong, responded in the comment section:

“Coinbase CEO here. This is really unfortunate to see. Apple seems to be eliminating usage of Dapps from the App Store.

If Apple customers want to be able to use Dapps, we may need to make this request know to Apple in some way. This is an important area of innovation in finance, and many developers and early adopters of this technology have millions of dollars worth of crypto tied up in these financial applications, which they will no longer be able to use on Apple mobile devices if this app store policy continues.”

Reuters reports that Ueli Maurer, Switzerland’s finance minister and outgoing president, said in an interview with Swiss broadcaster SRF that Facebook’s (NasdaqGS:FB) Libra will not succeed as it currently stands.

“I don’t think (Libra has a chance in its current form), because central banks will not accept the basket of currencies underpinning it.”

According to the article:

The cryptocurrency is to be backed by a reserve of assets such as bank deposits and government debt held by a network of custodians. That structure is meant to foster trust and avoid the price swings that plague other cryptocurrencies.

A report from Shanghai Securities News indicates that the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) has recently received an application for a blockchain exchange-traded-fund (ETF) from asset manager Penghua Fund. If approved, the ETF will be the first of its kind in China. Its aim is to track Shenzhen Stock Exchange-listed companies operating in the blockchain space. An unnamed “fund manager of a Beijing fund company” said:

"The launch of the relevant index gives investors new choices, and they can use the relevant theme funds to obtain dividends in the development of the blockchain industry in the future."

Crypto exchange Huobi recently announced the launch of “a local fiat gateway to enable a direct fiat-to-crypto trading facility between the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) and Tether (USDT)”, allowing investors in the country to “use the local fiat currency to trade over 250 cryptocurrencies available on Huobi Indonesia's digital asset exchange”. David Chen, Senior Director of Huobi Cloud, explained:

"The new fiat gateway is part of Huobi's global expansion strategy and reflects our ongoing commitment to working with strong local partners in key markets across the globe. By continuing to add new fiat/crypto pairs for Huobi Cloud 2.0, we want to make it frictionless for investors anywhere in the world to trade digital assets on a trusted and proven platform."

An article from Decrypt reports that Google’s (NasdaqGS:GOOGL) YouTube has conceded to have made a mistake in banning crypto-related channels in the past week. A spokesman from YouTube said:

"With the massive volume of videos on our site, sometimes we make the wrong call. When it's brought to our attention that a video has been removed mistakenly, we act quickly to reinstate it."

Though the spokesman went on to say that all affected videos were "reinstated" without "any penalty to the channel”, the Decrypt article identifies several channels that remain banned.

Cointelegraph reports that Canaan, Inc. (NasdaqGM:CAN), a manufacturer of mining application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), is set to launch new and improved mining machines with 5-nanometer chips in the first quarter of 2020. An excerpt from the article outlines the significance of this development:

As the features in chips become smaller, it becomes possible to fit more transistors in a silicon die of the same size. At the same time, the electric current has to travel less distance in the circuit to perform a calculation, which means that efficiency is improved and the amount of heat is decreased when the features are smaller.

Bank of Korea, the central bank of South Korea, revealed its intentions to explore CBDC (central bank digital currency) and crypto in a brief published today titled, Monetary Policy for 2020. An excerpt reads:

The Bank will continue to build on the research into new innovations such as distributed ledger technology, crypto assets, and CBDC, and play an active role as overseer to enhance security of the settlement systems. The Bank will organize a task force dedicated to CBDC research and recruit additional experts.

The Central Bank of the Bahamas announced that it will debut “a digital version of the Bahamian dollar, starting with a pilot phase in Exuma in December 2019, and extending in the first half of 2020 to Abaco”. The initiative is being called “Project Sand Dollar” as “sand dollar” is the proposed name of the CBDC itself. An excerpt from the press release reads:

Most of the benefits of introducing a digital currency are still unquantifiable. However, they include a potential suppression of economic costs associated with cash usage, and benefits to the Government from improved expenditure and tax administration systems. It is expected that the Government, as participant and user, would be a strong promoter of digital payments adoption, alongside non-bank payment services providers as the initial lead intermediaries in this space.

Malta-based crypto exchange OKEx has launched Bitcoin (BTC) options trading for select clients, according to a report from Cointelegraph. In part of a statement shared with the outlet, Lennix Lai, financial market director of OKEx, said:

“Options are a unique instrument that enables traders to manage, price and hedge the volatility of crypto assets [...] to take advantage of more than just market direction. The report indicates that “one patent aims to reduce the time to verify block data, while the other is designed to help participants set a validity period for a transaction in a blockchain network”. Chinese blockchain outlet Chain News writes that Albaba is “leading the industry in patent strength, ranking among the top three in the "2019 Blockchain Patent Comprehensive Strength List”, and the CoinDesk report states:

“Alibaba applied for the most blockchain patents in 2018 with 90 blockchain-related technologies, followed by IBM [NYSE:IBM] and Bank of America [NYSE:BAC].”

Japan-based credit card giant JCB Co., Ltd. has entered into an initial agreement with blockchain payments platform Paystand “to provide the first end-to-end digital payment platform for Japanese enterprises and JCB customers”, according to a recent press release. Paystand CEO Jeremy Almond commented:

“The challenges faced by B2B companies across the globe are similar: they are burdened by a commercial payment infrastructure mired in pre-internet technology. As a result, they are saddled with a legacy system rife with costly transaction fees, manual processes, and delays. Our relationship with JCB is yet another indication that enterprises in all markets are demanding easy, secure, frictionless business payments that leverage digital technology. JCB is an iconic, globally recognized brand in financial services and we are excited to partner with them to introduce better business payment technology to their customers and other companies throughout Japan and Asia..”
A new bill has surfaced in the U.S. Congress called the Crypto-Currency Act of 2020, which is aimed at bringing clarity to the regulatory status of cryptocurrencies. Crypto exchange Bitfinex announced via Twitter the arrival of a new feature which allows users to buy crypto using their debit and credit cards. The company’s official website reads:

Whether it's Bitcoin [BTC], USDt, Ethereum [ETH], or any other ERC20 tokens, pick your favorite and purchase with your credit or debit cards directly.
