Bitcoin (BTC) had an eventful holiday season, growing from a trading price of $23,340, as reported on the last Crypto Corner on December 24, to another new all-time high of roughly $28,300 early on December 27, according to data from CoinMarketCap. Since then, Bitcoin has corrected somewhat and is trading for right around $27,000 at press time. This recent bull run has put Bitcoin’s market cap just above $500 billion. A report from CoinDesk today indicates that Bitcoin is “up more than 275%,” year-to-date, and that in “the last 48 hours, it's risen 14%.” That same report cites significant institutional investment, as well as central banks’ “printing money with abandon,” as drivers in Bitcoin’s ongoing rally.

 

Japanese financial services firm SBI Holdings, Inc. (OTC:SBHGF) released a statement concerning Ripple, in light of news that the latter is being sued by the U.S. Securities and Exchanges Commission. Ripple, which is a partner of SBI Holdings, is classified as a crypto asset and not a security in Japan, according to SBI’s statement, and that “proceedings between the SEC and Ripple,” will not affect this status. An excerpt from the statement reads:

 

“XRP will continue to trade on cryptocurrency exchanges registered as cryptocurrency exchange companies as "cryptocurrency assets" rather than "securities" in Japan. We do not think that there will be any problems.”

 

Meanwhile, data from CoinMarketCap indicates that XRP is down 45 percent in the past week as the SEC lawsuit leads to an increasing amount of delistings from cryptocurrency exchanges.

 

Marathon Patent Group (NasdaqGS:MARA) has entered into a contract with Bitmain to purchase 70,000 Antminer S-19 ASIC miners. Marathon’s Chairman and CEO, Merrick Okamoto, said:

 

“This purchase is the largest order in dollar terms as well as the single largest order for S-19 ASIC miners that Bitmain has ever received. We appreciate the hard work their team is putting in to fulfil this order as well as the 30,000 S-19 miners we have purchased since August 2020. Our relationship with Bitmain is an important component of our potential for future success, and we look forward to continuing working with them to scale our business.”

 

Graph Blockchain Inc. (CSE:GBLC) has reported its second quarter 2021 financial and operating results. Highlights include a record net income increase to $84,483 CAD in the quarter as compared to a loss of $11,429 in the Q2 last year. Andrew Ryu, CEO of Graph Blockchain, said:

 

"In Q2 2021, the Company achieved a significant increase in gross revenue and improvement in the Company's working capital. This positive outcome was a direct result of our quick response in implementing a plan to begin selling essential products due to the global impact of the COVID-19 virus.
